Kulaijaya District is a district in the state of Johor in peninsular Malaysia around the town of Kulai. It covers Kulai Town, Ayer Bemban, Bukit Batu, Kangkar Pulai, Kelapa Sawit, Saleng, Sedenak, Seelong, Senai, and Sengkang.

Administration

Kulaijaya District is administered by Kulaijaya District Office. Kulai sub-district was upgraded to a full-fledged district on 1 January 2008 and renamed as Kulaijaya District.[1] The district is recognised as the state's 9th district.[2]

The local authorities of Kulai is Majlis Perbandaran Kulai (Kulai Municipal Council) and Majlis Perbandaran Johor Bahru Tengah (Johor Bahru Tengah Municipal Council,the part of southern Kulaijaya, etc: Kangkar Pulai). Kulai Town also the administry centre of Kulaijaya District and Kulai Municipal Council.

The Parliamentary Seat Area of P163 KULAI is the biggest Chinese population (69%) area in Johor.

Geography

Kulai, the town is 29 km from Johor Bahru city and 8 km from Skudai. It is located in the center of district. Kulai town and others town within this district are located along the old trunk road linking Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru. The main road, Federal Route , is lined with many retail shops. There are also many housing estates within the township. The town is surrounded by rubber and oil palm estates.

Economy

Locals are mostly involved in the agriculture sector, particularly in the oil palm and rubber estates surrounding the town. Many people work in small retail shops, which are located along the trunk road. Kulai has the first settlement of FELDA's (Federal Land Development Agency) oil palm plantation in the country - FELDA Taib Andak, which was launched by the second Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Abdul Razak. Kulai is still one of the main producers of palm oil in the country due to its numerous oil palm plantations. Kulai also exports fresh vegetables to Singapore on a daily basis.

The economy of Kulai has improved with numerous factories being set up in both Kulai and Senai. There are some public listed companies which have their offices in Kulai.

Kulaijaya is also within the Iskandar Malaysia.

Demography

The Chinese (59.1%) are concentrated in Kulai and Senai Town while the Malay population (30.8%) mostly on the FELDA's settlements and on some traditional Malay villages along the old trunk road. The Indians (9.8%) are mostly working in rubber estates, factories or run their businesses.[3]

The Chinese community in Kulai are mainly of the Hakka dialect group.

Infrastructure

Internal network

Skudai Highway or Federal route 1 is the most important inner link in Kulaijaya District, with many access along the road such as Senai Airport Highway, Skudai-Pontian Highway, Jalan Skudai, Jalan Kulai-Kota Tinggi , Diamond Interchange (access to Bandar Putra, Indahpura and proposed new NSE Exit), proposed Kulai Inner Ring Road. The government proposed to open a new road, Kulai-Senai Bypass, to resolve the traffic jam problem of the Skudai Highway.

Intercity network

Kulaijaya was an important stopover on the Johor Bahru-Kuala Lumpur trunk road in the 1970s and 1980s until the North-South Expressway(NSE) opened in 1994, which bypassed the town. The trunk road is now identified as Road One. The Second Link Expressway is also a new access to connect to Nusajaya, Singapore(Tuas). And the Senai-Desaru Expressway (SDE)is now completed to connect Senai and Desaru more quickly. The district also has 3 railway stations run by the Malayan Railway (KTM) in Kulai Town, Senai and Sedenak. NSE is also one of the access points to the Gunung Pulai nature reserve. Senai Airport, the international airport which serves Johor is within the municipality.

Airport

Sultan Ismail International Airport, also known as Senai International Airport is located in Senai, a strategic location within Kulaijaya District, with a structured highway and a proposed railway network, which will eventually stretch to China as well as providing easy access to the modern port facilities of the Tanjung Pelepas Port, Johor Port and Singapore.
