Koottanad is a small town in Palakkad District, Kerala, in South India. It is located 65 k.m away from the city of Palakkad and 32 k.m. from Thrissur, on the road between Guruvayoor and Palakkad. It is connected by road to other parts of Kerala and the nearest Rly. station is Pattambi 9 k.m. away. Bharathapuzha Nila Riverflows through Thrithala, 5 km away. Koottanad is famous for its festivals: the Koottanad Nercha of the Kottanad Juma Masjid and the Poorams of Amakkavu Bhagawathy Temple and Elavathukkal Bhagavathy temple are held in February—March every year.

The main roads from Koottanad are Kunnamkulam/Guruvayoor Road, Pattambi/Palakad Road, Edappal/Ponani Road, Peringodu Road and Thrithala Road. The Government Lower Primary School and Govt., Vocational Higher Secondary School, Vattenad are the only Govt. institutions at Koottanad.[2] GVHSS Vattenad was one of the schools participating in Sastraposhini, a scheme by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment to strengthen science education in the High Schools of the State by setting up model laboratories for conducting science experiments.[3] Koottanad High School has been mentioned in the news as the school from which Malayalam film director Major Ravi dropped out before embarking on his early career in the Indian army.[4] Hospital serving the town is Modern Hospital,Koottanad. CNS Ayurveda Chikitsalayam, Vydhyamatom Ayurvedic Nursing Home,situated at Mezhathur (3 k.m)and Raja Healthy Acres at Mala (2 k.m) are famous for Ayurvedic Treatment.
A.V. Kuttymalu Amma, great Congress leader belonged to Anakkara Vadakkath family at Anakkara near Koottanad,10 k.m away.
She attained fame in the 1930s when she was arrested for leading a procession of women during the Civil Disobedience Movement and was put in prison for two years with her two month old baby. A year-long A.V. Kuttimalu Amma birth centenary observance was inaugurated in March 2007 in the area.[5]
