Konvicted is the second studio album by hip hop and R&B Senegalese-American singer and rapper Akon. It was originally released in November 2006. The album features collaborations with Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Styles P and T-Pain.
Background
The album was accompanied by several different bonus tracks depending on territory. In the UK, the track "Gringo" and the clean radio version of "I Wanna Love You" were issued. "Gringo" also became a bonus track for Target customers in the US. In Japan, the UK B-Side "Struggle Everyday" became the final track on the album. "Struggle Everyday" also became a bonus track for Circuit City customers in the US. All digital versions of the album come accompanied by a remix of "I Wanna Love You", featuring Snoop Dogg and Eminem. Walmart customers in the US were treated to four exclusive bonus tracks, including unreleased tracks "Fair To You" and "Still Alone", plus Walmart Live Soundcheck versions of "Mama Africa" and "I Wanna Love You". The Platinum Edition of the album, issued in 2007, came complete with the new single "Sorry Blame It On Me", a new track entitled "Rush", and a remix of "Don't Matter". Some editions of the album also came packaged with a bonus DVD, containing a thirty-minute documentary and three music videos.
Critical reception
DJ Booth gave the album four out of five stars, stating: "It took five singles and more than twelve months for Akon‘s debut, Trouble, to finally become certified as a platinum selling album. However, history will not repeat itself with Konvicted, Akon’s highly anticipated follow-up album, which should reach the same marking point in less than half the time. Currently raising eyebrows just two singles into the masterpiece, Konvicted resumes where Trouble left off. Akon offers infectious hooks, catchy bridges and the ability to skip from R&B (Never Took The Time) to Hip-Hop (Blown Away) and over to World music (Mama Africa), without showcasing any as a personal specialty over another. The current singles (Smack That featuring Eminem and I Wanna Love You featuring Snoop Dogg) display Akon’s skill during collaboration, but make no mistake: the album is all AKON. The most masterful of which have Akon belting out his own backup vocals and requiring the assistance of nobody (well maybe an engineer, but he may do that too). Konvicted took Akon longer than expected to complete, after his production and song writing abilities garnered him work as one of the most sought after talents in the industry. Work on upcoming material from Young Jeezy, Gwen Stefani and even Elton John required the creative process for Akon’s own album to take a temporary back seat. Temporary, the key word of course, since the end result of his patience is a complete album with as many single choices as their include tracks."[1]
Chart performance
Konvicted debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart, selling over 750,000 copies in one week.[2] The album was able to stay within the top twenty for 28 consecutive weeks, but eventually started to drop slowly. On its 2th week, it broke the one million mark,[3] though it was certified platinum two weeks later. In its tenth week it had a total of 1.5 million copies. The album was officially certified double platinum on it's second week. 2 million records were sold after twenty weeks. After thirty weeks on the chart it had moved 2.5 million units. On November 19, 2007, the RIAA has certified the Konvicted album 5x platinum status with 5 million units sold in the United States. The album became the second best selling record of the year on the Billboard 200 charts.[4] The album received Gold status.
