Knesselare is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Knesselare proper and Ursel. On January 1, 2006 Knesselare had a total population of 7,885. The total area is 37.27 km² which gives a population density of 212 inhabitants per km².
The municipality's name is derived from the Germanic words "klisse" (herb) and "laar", (a soggy brushwood terrain).[2]
