Kirchlindach is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

History

The name Kirchlindach first appeared in writing on 2 October 1185, when Pope Lucius III affirmed legal possession of the area to Erlach in a papal bull. The municipality's coat of arms shows three lime leaves on a silver field crossed by a red bar.

Geography

Kirchlindach has an area, as of 2009, of 11.95 km2 (4.61 sq mi). Of this area, 7.97 km2 (3.08 sq mi) or 66.7% is used for agricultural purposes, while 2.83 km2 (1.09 sq mi) or 23.7% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 1.01 km2 (0.39 sq mi) or 8.5% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.09 km2 (22 acres) or 0.8% is either rivers or lakes and 0.02 km2 (4.9 acres) or 0.2% is unproductive land.[3]

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 5.8% and transportation infrastructure made up 2.2%. 23.0% of the total land area is heavily forested. Of the agricultural land, 52.9% is used for growing crops and 12.5% is pastures, while 1.3% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.[3]

Demographics

Kirchlindach has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 2,849.[1] As of 2007, 4.3% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 4.1%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (92.8%), with French being second most common ( 2.2%) and Italian being third ( 0.7%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 31.2% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the FDP (20.4%), the SPS (17.7%) and the Green Party (15.5%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 21.5% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 63.2% and the seniors (over 64 years old) make up 15.4%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Kirchlindach about 87.3% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Kirchlindach has an unemployment rate of 1.49%. As of 2005, there were 136 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 39 businesses involved in this sector. 88 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 20 businesses in this sector. 541 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 81 businesses in this sector.[4]
