The Tipperary–Kilkenny fixture is traditionally regarded as one of the most significant sporting rivalries in hurling. Tipperary are the second most successful team in the Munster Championship while Kilkenny are the most successful team in the Leinster Championship. Kilkenny have won the 33 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championships, more than any other team while Tipperary are third on the roll of honour with 26 titles. The sides have met 21 times in the senior hurling championship with Tipperary winning 12 times to Kilkenny's 9 wins. There has never been a draw in a senior championship fixture between the 2 teams. The Kilkenny-Tipperary fixture is the second most common All Ireland Senior hurling final fixture, the sides meeting 17 times at the final stage, with Tipperary having won 10 of these finals to Kilkenny's 7 wins. The last 3 year's All-Ireland finals has been between these 2 sides, the only time ever the same 2 teams have met in All-Ireland Senior hurling finals 3 years in a row.
Roots
History
Both Kilkenny and Tipperary are members of hurling's 'Big Three', with Cork completing the trio. Kilkenny, however, are latecomers to the top table of hurling’s elite teams. By the time the team won their first All-Ireland title in 1904, both Cork and Tipperary had already annexed six championship titles apiece. Kilkenny weren’t long catching up, however, as they won seven All-Ireland titles in the ten years between 1904 and 1913.
