Playing career

Club

McGuckin played his club hurling with the famous Glen Rovers club in Blackpool. He had much underage success with the Glen, and he also won a Cork SHC title in 1989. It was Glen Rovers’ first county title since 1976.

Inter-county

McGuckin first came to prominence as a member of the Cork minor hurling team in the mid-1980s. He first tasted success in 1985 when he won a Munster and an All-Ireland medal with Cork. Three years later in 1988 he was a member of the Cork under-21 side that claimed Munster and All-Ireland honours. By 1990 McGuckin had joined the Cork senior hurling team. He captained the side to win the Munster title that year, before later winning his first, and only, senior All-Ireland title following a defeat of Galway.
