Khaga

Khaga (Hindi: खागा, Urdu: کھاگہ) is a town and a nagar panchayat in Fatehpur district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

History

The town of Khaga is said to have been established by a brave ruler belonging to the martial Arakh clan, named Maharaja Khadagsen (also referred to as Khadag Singh). The Arakhs who ruled doaba region post Gupta period, came to control large parts of Fatehpur district (including Ayah and Khaga) and parts of Allahabad region (around Singrur) under Khadagsen's rule. It is also said that Arakh kshatriya (also referred to as 'Arkawanshi' अर्कवंशी) rulers conducted Dashashwamegha yajnas (Horse sacrifices) in the doaaba region (area between Ganges and Yamuna) to prove their supremacy. Their power decayed with the rise of competing powers in the form of other Rajputs and Muslims.

Demographics

As of 2001^[update] India census^[2], Khaga had a population of 12,020. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Khaga has an average literacy rate of 63%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 53%. In Khaga, 20% of the population is under 6 years of age.
