Kevin Pollak's Chat Show
For the process of certifying rough non-conflict diamonds, see Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, also known as KPCS for short.
Kevin Pollak's Chat Show is a weekly interview program hosted by comedian and impressionist Kevin Pollak and streamed over the Web on UStream. The show airs live every Sunday at 3pm PST from the Mahalo.com studio in Santa Monica, California. Episodes are then archived on the show's official website, http://www.KevinPollaksChatShow.com, as well as on iTunes at http://www.itunes.com/kpcs or at http://www.ThisWeekIn.com. The show premiered on March 22, 2009, with guests LeVar Burton and Samm Levine.[1]
Format
The show typically opens with a monologue from Pollak, which can consist of a simple introduction, an anecdote, a joke or even a discussion of interesting news from that week.[2] The majority of the show is taken up with long-form interview segments, typically with actors, writers or comics. Initial episodes would feature 2 hour-long interviews, though more recently, the show has limited itself to one guest per episode. There are also a number of "games" Pollak plays with his guests. Some of these include "Three Degrees of Kevin Pollak," a take-off on "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon," in which the live audience suggests actors who must then be linked through film co-stars to Pollak. Each episode also includes "The Larry King Game," in which guests perform a bad impression of TV personality Larry King, exposing personal information that Larry should never, but does in fact reveal, then a throw to the phones including a funny sounding city name.[3] In 2010 the Kevin Pollak Chat Show was nominated for a Streamy for Best Hosted Chat Show but lost to Diggnation.
History
Kevin Pollak's Chat Show started after Kevin Pollak met internet entrepreneur Jason Calacanis at an underground poker game in Los Angeles. After briefing Pollak on Twitter and Ustream, Pollak shared his vision for a web-based show with Calacanis. Mahalo.com, Calacanis' startup, had recently built a studio and Calacanis offered to produce Pollak's show. The show was among the most popular podcasts for download on Itunes and had a strong following on its own website. The Chat Show was available in both audio and video format.
In January 2011, in an attempt to generate funds for the show with which to pay the crew who worked on its production (who, up until this point, were volunteering their time), the Chat Show began charging for downloads of the podcast, as well as the video playback. The Live Feed remained free of charge, however. This new policy led to a massive drop-off in viewer download, and shortly thereafter it was announced that the weekly podcast and video playback would go back to being free. However, past episodes would be bundled together in groups of 25 for which a small fee would be assessed to download the back catalog.
Regular Cast Members
- Jaime Fox: Pollak's partner (not to be confused with Jamie Foxx, aka Eric Bishop). She runs the chatroom during the show, compiles the question roster, and provides occasional fangirl commentary. Inventor of the Larry King Game.
