Kawangware is a slum in Kenya. It is about 15km from the city centre of Nairobi, to the West. [1] It is between Lavington Estate and Dagoretti. [2] It has about hundreds of thousands of residents, many of whom are children.[3] Water supplied by the city authority is not available every day. [4] Safe drinking water is expensive in Kawangware. [5]
A Kawangware Primary School, Kawangware School and Kawangware Academy exist. Many children in the slum do not attend school, however. [6] Kawangware has supermarkets. [7] The population is ethnically diverse. [8] Kawangware has a library. [9] Many persons in Kawangware are HIV-positive. [10] Kawangware has a medcial clinic. [11] Most people there live on less than USD$ 1 a day. [12] Other informal settlements in the Nairobi area include Huruma, Kiambiu, Korogocho, Mukuru and Kibera. [13]
