The D'Souza family of Kavathar had been known till far late late nineteenth century, and have also made significant contributions towards the St.Paul's Church, Balkunje. Kavathar Temple " Siri Abbagha Dharagha Mahalingeshwar Temple " under the aegis of Neena Nithyanand Ajila,is known for its annual Siri Jatra during the Pagu Purnima

It has no concrete roads. It has forest area rich in diverse species of birds and mammals. Peacocks are found in abundance, while tigers, which once inhabited its forests have vanished. It has a wide range of snakes, and a number of coconut and cashew trees. Paddy cultivation has now been abandoned, since newer generations have left the area and migrated to the Mangalore city, Mumbai or Pune and even stay abroad.
The place is known by the name Girijana Colony, since the northern half has been distributed among the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes by the government.
Transport facilities are almost absent . Buses didn't visit the place, as they argued that it cost them lot to come there and then take a u-turn back to the Padavu. The union of private buses said that coming inside the Girijana colony is economically viable only if they can go further to Balkunje. But going to Balkunje was not possible as there is a seasonal river which flows through the road which connects Balkunje and Kavathar, and a bridge is required to connect. The constructuion of bridge had not begun until now because the authorities of the Kavatharu temple had opposed it, saying that it would disturb the pilgrimage, although the bridge which as to be constructed is negligibly small. But now, the bridge has been built and bus services are expected to begin.
