Kaul Singh Thakur (born 23 November 1945) is the current present President of the Pradesh Congress Committee, Himachal Pradesh, India

Life and career

Kaul Singh Thakur was born in Village Sambal district Mandi, the son of Lachhman Singh Thakur. He studied at Punjab University, Chandigarh whee he earned a Bachelor of Arts. He got married to Chinta Devi. The name of his second wife is Padma Thakur. He is a political and legal practitioner. He organised a student's union in Government College, Mandi and got elected as its president. He also attended leadership, mountaineering and social service courses as a senior Officer of the National Cadet Corps. He is one of the C certificate holders in NCC. He represented Himachal in the Republic Day parade in Delhi in 1967. He also performed traffic duties during the time of Pak-aggression in 1965.He started his political career as a member of the Panchayat Samiti, Mandi Sadar. He was elected its chairman in 1973 and remained at the post till 1977. He did many developmental works at Panchayat level.

He got elected to the State Legislative Assembly for the first time in the year of 1977..Also remained Deputy Chairman, State Planning Board (Cabinet rank), 1983; Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare, Parliamentary Affairs & Law (Independent Charge), 1985–90; Speaker, Vidhan Sabha, 1993-98; and Minister for Irrigation & Public Health, Law & Justice, Urban Development & Parliamentary Affairs, March 6, 2003 to December, 2007. As Speaker he participated in various Annual All India Presiding Officers’ as well as CPA Conferences held from time to time.

He is serving as the PCC President a second time in a row, despite strong opposition from leaders like Virbhadra Singh and Vidya Stokes. He is also looked upon by many as a potential Chief Ministerial candidate for the 2012 Himachal Vidhan Sabha elections. [1]

He was seriously injured when he was returning to Shimla from Hira Nagar and was driving the vehicle when it rolled down 100 ft near Dhanda, 12 km from Shimla. He was immediately rushed to Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) hospital, Shimla and was stated to be out of danger. He suffered injuries in his head, spine and a fractured leg but was progressing well.
