Katpadi (Tamil: காட்பாடி, pronounced [katːpaːdi]) is an area in Vellore, at the northern most part of Vellore city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The place gained importance due to its strategic location on the broad gauge line between Chennai-Bangalore and Villupuram-Tirupati. It is known to house VIT, one of India's premier educational institution.

Geography

Katpadi is located at .[1] It has an average elevation of 224 metres (734 feet).

Katpadi was once a village and was upgraded to a panchayat town,supported by its own Taluk office. It is a major Assembly Constituency. The original Katpadi village is now called Old Katpadi which lies on road which connects Thiruvalam and Chittor Bus Stop.

Katpadi lies in the northern side of the Palar river. Andhra Pradesh state border is just a 5 minute drive from Katpadi. On Vellore being upgraded to a Corporation, Katpadi has also been included in the city limits. The Government Boys Higher Secondary School located here is more than 100 years old.

A broad gauge railway line which connects Tamil Nadu to Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh to Tamil Nadu (Chennai - Bangalore, Thiruvananthapuram and Tirupathi - Mysore) passes through Katpadi. The railway station is location on Cuddalor - Chittor State Highway, SH 9.

Katpadi Junction is the name station which serves as the primary railway station of Vellore city, providing connectivity to virtually every city and town in India.

Katpadi Junction is one of the most important junctions in Southern Railway bearing the station code KPD.It is the prestigious railway junction because chennai-bangalore shatabdi express stops here,this is the only junction shatabdi stops between chennai-bangalore.And also expect mysore shatabdi all super fast trains stops here.totally 150 trains crossing katpadi(vellore)junction everyday. The number of commuters have increased tremendously mainly due to the Christian Medical College & Hospital (CMC), Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), the temple town of Tirupati and more recently due to the Golden temple at Sripuram

Chittoor Bus Stand

Chittoor Bus Stand is the biggest bus stop and the only Bus stand in Katpadi. The name refers to chittoor, Andhra Pradesh. This is because all chittoor buses stop here. Many buses start here. There are buses to Gudiyatham, Arcot, Ranipet, Thiruvalam ans Muthukadai from here. The place was only a bare land in 1995, but due to the development of katpadi, Chittoor bus stand has developed to great heights. There is a new building being built by the corporation for shops and also for public shelter. There is a statue of C._N._Annadurai in this bus stand.

Vellore Institute of Technology University (VIT)

The Vellore Institute of Technology University (popularly known as VIT) is in Katpadi, Vellore. VIT has been ranked as the best private engineering university in India by the magazine India Today.[2][3] Both India Toady and Times of India ranked had ranked VIT at No.12. VIT is also the first Indian University to be accredited by the prestigious Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) in London and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) in the USA. VIT University has six schools of study under its umbrella and also houses the VIT Business School. The college has around 15000 students from all over India and from over 20 countries studying in its campus.

Cinema

There is currently only one theatre in Katpadi. Apsa theatre was recently closed. The only remaining theatre is Balaji Theatre(Dolby Digital, Qube Digital) on Chittoor road. The movies running in this theatre can be seen in the link below.
