The Kapsch Group, headquartered in Vienna, Austria, is an international Road Telematics, Information Technology and Telecommunications Company. The corporate group, with more than 4,000 employees worldwide generated total revenue of € 829.9 Million ($1,122 Million) as of March 2011 and has invested € 55.8 Million ($ 75.5 Million) in research and development.[1]

Company history

In September 1892 by Johann Kapsch (1845–1921) founded a precision engineering workshop in Vienna, one of whose clients was the Post- und Telegraphenverwaltung (Mailing- and Telegraph-Administration). In 1916 the company changed its name to Telefon- und Telegrafen-Fabriks-Aktiengesellschaft Kapsch & Söhne in Wien ("Telephone and Telegraph Manufacturing Stock Company Kapsch & Sons in Vienna"). During World War I the company produced night sights for the Austrian Model 1895 rifle and carbine.[2] With the growing number of inventions, Kapsch expanded its product range by adding the manufacturing of capacitors, tin tubes and dry batteries. In 1923 Kapsch started to manufacture radios, with the first TV sets following in 1955. After the Second World War, Kapsch was heavily involved in rebuilding the Austrian telephone network.[3][4]

Kapsch BusinessCom AG (KBC)

In 2001, Kapsch AG bought the majority of former Schrack BusinessCom AG, which was subsequently merged with the Kapsch Enterprise division. As a result of this merger Kapsch BusinessCom AG was founded and expanded its activities and outreach throughout Central Europe.[6] Today, the company has subsidiaries in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Macedonia and Poland.

The company is a regional reseller and integration partner to technology companies in the IT, network and telecommunications sector: Cisco Gold Certified Partner, Microsoft Gold Partner, Aastra Training Provider.

Kapsch BusinessCom AG produces the Card Reader and GINA Box for the Austrian e-Card system, which is placed in doctors’ offices.

Kapsch CarrierCom AG (KCC)

Kapsch CarrierCom AG was founded as the Austria Telecommunication GmbH (AT) in 1982 as a 50% joint venture between the two leading Austrian Telecommunication Companies Kapsch and Schrack. The company was leading the efforts to digitize the Austrian telephone system. By the end of 1995, Kapsch had acquired the 50% Ericsson-Schrack share and thus became the exclusive owner. In 2000, the AT was renamed Kapsch CarrierCom AG in the course of restructuring the Kapsch Group.[7]

In 2009, the company bought (partly) Croatian company TIS.kis, which produces messaging, device management and mobile content delivery solutions for mobile operators in south European region. Name of the new company is Kapsch TIS as a Kapsch subsidiary in Croatia. In Q3 2009, Croatian company Ring Datacom is 100% acquired by Kapsch TIS. Ring Datatacom is positioned in the field of fraud management and CRM systems.

Kapsch CarrierCom is a System Integrator/Innovator in communication technology solutions for the carriers of fixed, mobile and data networks. The main fields of operation are services and applications for next-generation networks, OSS/BSS services as well as technical consulting service, design, development, construction and integration to the maintenance and operation of entire networks.

In November 2009, Kapsch CarrierCom's joint bid with Ericsson to acquire Nortel's GSM assets was successful. Under the agreements, Ericsson is acquiring certain assets of Nortel's GSM business in North America while Kapsch is paying USD 33 million to acquire most of the remaining assets outside North America.[8]

In 2011, Kapsch announced plans to insource GSM and GSM-R production from China to Austria.[9]

Kapsch TrafficCom AG (KTC)

Kapsch TrafficCom AG is an international supplier of intelligent road traffic telematic solutions. The company develops and sells products, systems and services primarily for electronic toll collection (ETC) systems and specializes in solutions for open road tolling (ORT), multi-lane free-flow (MLFF) and high occupancy tolling (HOT).

In addition, the company supplies traffic management systems, with a focus on road safety and traffic control, and electronic access systems and parking management.

The company, with headquarters in Vienna, has subsidiaries and interests in 23 countries.[10] With over 210 references in 35 countries (as of March/2009) in Europe, Australia, North America, Latin America, Middle East, Asia Pacific and in South Africa, and about 13 million on-board units (OBUs) and over 11,300 equipped lanes, Kapsch TrafficCom has positioned itself as one of the world’s leading suppliers in this specialized arena.

Kapsch TrafficCom AG built the Austrian Truck Tolling System, which went on stream in 2004.

Since 2004 the company established subsidiaries in Moscow, Russia and Slovenia and has entered into a joint venture agreement with Busi Impianti S.p.A., Italy, creating Kapsch-Busi S.p.A.

Since June 26, 2007, 30.3% of Kapsch TrafficCom AG has been listed in the Prime Market on the Vienna Stock Exchange. 69.7% remains in the possession of Kapsch Group Beteiligungs GmbH. Overall 2.2 million new and 1,16 million old shares were brought to the market. The IPO was 14 times over-subscribed.[11] In fiscal year 2008/09, Kapsch TrafficCom AG generated a turnover of € 200.3 million, an EBITDA of € 35 million and an EBIT of € 29 million. The result after tax was € 16.4 million.
