Kapalong, Davao del Norte. Another historic breakthrough in Kapalong which made the town’s people, so jubilant and delighted was the blessing and inauguration of the completed 25M Town Square development last Thursday, December 15, 2011. The blessing was administered by Rev. Fr. Disocoro Bucod, Assistant Parish Priest. Mayor Timbol led the cutting of the ribbon with no less than the Honorable Governor Rodolfo P. del Rosario. Other guests include Board Members Vicente Eliot and Joey Millan and Asuncion Mayor Nilo Parenas.

Keeping its vow of bolstering development for the municipality, the Timbol-Estrada administration has implemented various infrastructure projects that eventually brought forth greater opportunities and economic advancement for the people and the municipality in general. After the completion of the 1st phase construction of the 20M new school building for the town’s local college and the 6.8 state of the art slaughterhouse, Kapalong has now another big project to be proud of. This 25M town square development includes the construction of the auditorium building ready for bigger events having a 2000 capacity. For outdoor performances, an amphi-theater was designed which could accommodate 1800 people. For the audience beyond this capacity, a fortress was purposely designed to accommodate them. Moreover, a fiber glass modular play system was installed for toddlers and those children aging 7-12 years old. Made of fiber glass, this play system is definitely safe for the children. 2 breastfeeding rooms are also provided for nursing mothers to give them and their babies an avenue to enjoy a relaxed and happy feeding atmosphere. Jogging lanes, lagoon and foot fountains with colorful lights are some of the added attractions particularly at night. “I’m so happy that finally this big project is already completed. I am indeed thankful to the Sangguaniang Bayan headed by Vice Mayor Estrada for their support, for without them this won’t be materialized,” Mayor Timbol stressed. Governor del Rosario in his speech commended Mayor Timbol of his leadership which made Kapalong one of the progressive municipalities in Davao del Norte. He also added that the recent projects the local government has implemented is a manifestation that the municipal officials are really unified and committed for the development of the town.

Kapalong Infohub Flashfloods bring 100M damage in Kapalong

Kapalong, Davao del Norte. Heavy rainfall poured in Kapalong on December 27, 2011 at 7:00 AM causing severe flashfloods in the identified flood prone barangays and even in some unexpected places in town.

There were areas which never experienced such flooding but were swamped with water for the first time.

The Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council headed by its chair, Mayor Edgardo L. Timbol mobilized immediately the Quick Response Team to carry out their respective tasks and responsibilities.

The Maniki Central Elem. School mini gym which is identified as the evacuation center, housed the evacuees which reached to 573 families mostly dwelling in the river banks. The Maniki Brgy. Council under Hon. Ma. Theresa R. Timbol provided their food which was also aided by the local government.

35 houses and a church were reportedly destroyed and washed out by the flood current. Almost all the barangays were partly flooded which caused damage to property, roads, communal facilities, crops, fish ponds and live stocks. Total damaged reached to P106,791,956.00.

“We are still thankful because not a single casualty happened. I would like to extend my great thanks to the PDRRMC thru Governor Rodolfo P. del Rosario, the coastguards, 911 Davao, the Philippine Army 60IB and 103 brigade, ARESCOM, the BFP and PNP and other functionaries for the round the clock monitoring and rescue operation.” Mayor Timbol stressed.

At around 3PM of same date Timbol called for an emergency LDRRMC meeting to assess the extent of damages. Basing on the damage and needs assessment analysis, the body recommended to the Sanggunaing Bayan thru Vice Mayor Romy C. Estrada for the declaration of state of calamity which was subsequently enacted on the following morning thru a special session.

The declaration of the state of calamity would already allow the local government to use its calamity fund to address the needs of its constituents who were victims of the catastrophe and rehabilitate the damaged government structures and roads. At 1:30 PM on December 28, the water level was already stable and the flooded barangay roads were already passable. The evacuees went back to their respective homes. The LDRRMC rehabilitation committee continued their relief operation in all the affected barangays.

With the recent tragedy, the Mayor is hopeful that the flood victims living in the river banks would now realize the necessity of relocating themselves as the local government has already provided a resettlement site for them. Over 50 families have now settled at the Montegardo Village in Sitio Ilaboon of Brgy. Maniki and never anymore that they will experience the upsurge of water level in the Libuganon River which is feared to cause wanton destruction to their lives and property. Moreover, despite of the calamity the municipality experienced, Mayor Timbol still took time to extend support to the Cagayan flood victims. Just yesterday, December 29, a forward truck loaded with sacks of rice, sardines and used clothings donated by the municipal employees was sent to Cagayan DSWD Office to turn-over the stuff. He added that same assistance will also be given to Iligan victims.
