Kanungu is a town in Western Uganda. It is the location of the district headquarters for Kanungu District. The district is named after the town.

Kanungu is located approximately 420 kilometres (260 mi), by road, southwest of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city.[1] The nearest town from Kanungu is Rukungiri, located 26 kilometres (16 mi), on a dirt road, northeast of Kanungu.[2] The coordinates of the town are:00 57 27S, 29 47 23E (Latitude:-0.9575; Longitude:29.7897).
The 2002 national population census estimated the population of the town at 12,883. The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), estimated the population of Kanungu at 14,600 in 2008.[3] In 2011, UBOS estimated the mid-year population of Kanungu at 15,600.[4]
