Kanchalan (Russian: Канчалан) is a rural locality (a selo) in Anadyrsky District of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Russia, located northwest of Anadyr. Population as of 2005: 635,[3] down from 727 in 2003.[7] Of the people reportedly living in the village in 2005, 540 were of indigenous origin.[8] Municipally, the village is incorporated as Kanchalan Rural Settlement.[2]

Geography

The village is located on the banks of the Kanchalan River, one of the three rivers which, together with the Anadyr and the Belaya Rivers, flows into the Bering Sea at the Gulf of Anadyr.

Economy

As with many of the rural localities throughout Chukotka, the population is overwhelming indigenous (around 90% [7]), mainly Chukchi, meaning that the main economic drivers are reindeer herding, fishing and hunting.

The village possesses a high school and a daycare centre.[7]
