Kalwakurthy, also spelled as Kalvakurti (Telugu:కల్వకుర్తి) is a town and Mandal in Mahbubnagar district of Andhra Pradesh. It is located 80 km from Hyderabad, India on Srisailam highway. It is around 56 km from the District head quarter Mahbubnagar.

When Taluka system was in place Kalwakurthy was the largest taluka in the district interms of area. Kalwakurthy assembly constituency seat had dual members in the erstwhile Hyderabad state.

Demographics

According to The Imperial Gazetteer of India[1], Kalvakurti was a taluk in Mahbubnagar district, Hyderabad State. It contained 101 villages with an area of 583 square miles. The population in 1901 was 54,384 compared with 52,132 in 1891. The headquarters Kalvakurti had a population of 2,230.

Kalwakurthy town has population of 35,146 with 18,126 men and 17,020 women as per 2001 Census. It is one of the big towns in Mahbubnagar District. In the old days kalwakurthy was known as kavulakurthy.why because in kalwakurthy there were number of writers,novelists and history writers.

Politics

It is the home town of political leader Jaipal Reddy. Between 1969 and 1984 he was an MLA from Kalwakurthy. Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. T. Rama Rao was defeated in 1989 assembly elections in this constituency by Chittaranjan Das. Hyderabad state First elected Chief Minister Burgula Ramakrishna Rao was born in padakallu village of Kalwakurthy Taluka. Current MLA is G. Jaipal Yadav.

How to reach

From Hyderabad Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station buses are available every 15 minutes. From Jadcherla, National Highway 7,Kalwakurthy can be reached in 30 minutes. [1]
