The Christmas Proclamation "Kalenda" still remembered today by high-church Christians is a lasting testimony to the Jewish origins of Christianity. Immediately after the prayer vigil held just before midnight mass at Christmas Eve it begins the celebration mentioned in the Talmud and Mishna (Avodah Zara 8a). It may also be included in the Midnight mass itself immediately before the Gloria. The 8 day celebration is described in Avodah Zara 8a as established by Adam for the righteous Gentiles following an Advent period of solemnity and fasting. The original celebration Kalenda began on the eve of Dec 25th (originally just after the winter solstice) and lasted until Jan 1st. See Kalenda (liturgy)
