Kafenio

A Kafenio (everyday Greek Καφενεíο, literary Greek Καφενεῖον kafenion; plural kafenia) is a traditional Greek café or coffee shop. They typically serve Greek (“Turkish”) coffee (Greek Ελληνικός καφές Ellinikós kafés) – without sugar (sketos), slightly sweet (metrios) or sweet (glikos), Frappé (φραπές), Beer, Retsina (Ρετσίνα) and Ouzo (ούζο). Most kafenia provide meze or free snacks similar to tapas and rarely serve full meals. Kafenia are generally family-run businesses and furnished simply with wooden Greek chairs with bast fibre seats and small wooden or metal tables. The walls are often whitewashed. Kafenia often serve as social centers of the villiages and urban centers where they are located.. Elderly meet and younger people socialize after work or play a game of cards or tavli. Traditionally, the kafenio was a place where women were not welcome but modern kafenia are frequented by girls and women. [1]
