KZZU was previously KREM-FM, an Adult Album Alternative station. In 1984, KREM-TV sold KREM-FM and its frequency, changed call letters and switched to a Top 40 format, enjoying relative success for two decades. During this time the station was known as "93 Zoo FM". Part of the station's popularity stemmed from the "Breakfast Boys", Dave Sposito and Ken Hopkins, who, in their morning show, almost exclusively discussed pop culture items. KZZU has hosted some famous on-air talents well in its past such as Jamie Patrick, Casey Christopher, Devin James, Steve Hawk, Paul Gray and Jeff “Parker” who rocked the nights for many years.
In response to their primary competitor, Spokane's 103.1 KCDA, KZZU shifted to its adult top 40 on October 17, 2005 and offers a range of music that includes an Adult oriented Hip-Hop and Pop selection. With the new format, the Breakfast Boys were reunited with Molly Allen, discarding the "The Breakfast Boys" monicker. Dave, Ken, Molly and producer Dave Spencer currently host the station's morning show, which runs from 6 to 10am. Their targeted audience are individuals from 18 to 49 years of age. By 2008, KZZU returned to contemporary hit radio following the flip of KEZE from rhythmic top 40 to country music. KEZE swapped formats with sister station KXLY-FM in 2010, as KEZE is an adult album alternative station now. Mediabase & Nielsen BDS still describe the station as hot adult contemporary, even after the return to top 40 at the station. However, it would resurface as adult top 40 when KZBD dropped alternative rock for contemporary hit radio because of Mediabase & Nielsen BDS still reporting the station as adult top 40. Most of the modern AC acts heard on sister station KEZE (and prior to 2010, KXLY-FM) have been replaced by rhythmic contemporary acts by then, with a similar trend done by most hot AC stations in Canada, as well as Cincinnati's WKRQ.
In 2005 KZZU became the only Top 40 outlet of its kind in the United States to have an all-female airstaff, and that didn't last long. Currently, the only male airstaff on KZZU are Dave Sposito and Ken Hopkins, who both are the station's morning show hosts along with Molly Allen. The rest of the airstaff on KZZU are all female, a rarity for a Top 40 station in the U.S,
It is one of seven local Spokane FM radio stations heard across Canada to subscribers of the Shaw Direct satellite TV service.[1]
