The station was not granted its original construction permit until October 4, 2005; however, it has operated since 2001 under a series of special temporary authority grants, the most recent one granted on April 4, 2008.[1] These special temporary authority grants were for analog operation; however, KXLJ has since filed for a flash-cut to digital television[2], even though the station, as a low-power station, is exempt from the digital transition for full-service stations.
After 6 years of "Silent Temporary Authority" applications, the station's license was deleted on October 6, 2008.[3] At present, Ketchikan Television LLC is reapplying for the channel 24 position in Juneau.[4] The deletion of KXLJ's license has not affected the programming on sister stations KUBD or KTNL. It is unclear how cable systems who relied on KXLJ are dealing with this programming setback.
