It is the market's affiliate of The CW. It is part of the first major television duopoly in Albuquerque; Its owner, ACME Communications, also owns KASY-TV, a MyNetworkTV affiliate. KWBQ offers a general entertainment format with mostly off network sitcoms, plus first run shows from the CW and hour long dramas & movies on weekends.

KWBQ signed on March 4, 1999 with programming from The WB (which had aired on local UPN affiliate KASY from the fall of 1995 to 1997). In June 1999, Acme Communications bought KASY (and most of its programming inventory, except a portion owned by Emmis for KRQE) from Ramar Communications, also resulting in the termination of a local marketing agreement with KRQE, the market's CBS affiliate.
As a result, ACME created the market's first television duopoly. The station was branded as "WB19" for several years and was rebranded as "New Mexico's WB" towards the end of its affiliation with The WB.
Most of the station remained the same until 24 January 2006, in which CBS Corporation, owner of UPN, and Warner Bros., the owner of the WB, announced that said networks would merge on 18 September 2006, and launch The CW Television Network. Following that, on 9 March, ACME affiliated KWBQ with The CW. Such a move made ACME the third company, after Capitol Broadcasting (WJZY and WMYT-TV) and Weigel Broadcasting (WCWW-LP and WMYS-LP) to affiliate a duopoly with The CW and MyNetworkTV, respectively. As a result, branding changed to reflect their new network. The station as then re-branded with the name "New Mexico's CW".
At the beginning of the CW affiliation, a new mascot was created for the station to be used as a promotional gimmick and use at local station events. This mascot was named "The CW Guy" and was basically a costumed character that looked like a giant TV with arms and legs and a CW logo on the screen. This character was a replacement to the Michigan J. Frog costumed character that the station used to use when it was affiliated with the WB Network.
It was announced on 4 June 2010, that ACME Communications would be entering into a Shared Services agreement with LIN TV in regards to the two TV stations in Albuquerque: KWBQ and KASY. This means some of the mutual operating costs will be shared to help reduce overall costs in Accounting & Engineering.
