KVMI originally signed on 96.7 FM in the 1992 with an oldies format as "Kool 96.7". Kool 96.7 later changed its format to a FM Talk format. In 2003, KVMI moved from its 5 kilowatt 96.7 signal to a new 25 kilowatt 103.9 frequency at a new transmitter site. The frequency move was an attempt to get a better signal into the Fargo area. Since the relocation of KBOT 104.1 in the summer of 2011 to Detroit Lakes, KVMI can now file for a powerful 50,000 watt C2 signal that will put a stronger city-grade signal into Fargo/Moorhead.
The move to 103.9 also encountered a format change back to oldies as "Kool 103.9". Increasing competition from KEGK "Eagle 106.9" forced KVMI to change its format to adult contemporary as "Star 103.9" in 2004.
KVMI changed to a country music format as "103.9 The Truck" in January 2006, along with relocating the studios from West Fargo to Casselton, North Dakota. The Truck also broadcasts high school athletics for rural Cass County and updates and programming from the Red River Farm Network, where they now serve rural Cass Country (where its signal is the best) as well as Fargo. KVMI is owned by Vision Media Inc. Vision Media Inc. has 1 sole stockholder, owning 100% of the stock, James Babbitt.
