KMCS (93.1 FM) is a radio station licensed to Muscatine, Iowa and broadcasting an Adult Hits format under the branding Mac 94.7 - 93.1 along with its sister station, KMCN in Clinton, Iowa. Both stations are currently owned by Prairie Radio Communications. The transmitter for KMCS has always been, and is still co-located with the transmitter of sister AM station KWPC in northwest Muscatine. Both stations also share a studio facility at this site, although, since the call-letter and format change in 2005, the FM studio has been relegated mostly to the broadcasting of live and local Muscatine area programming, mainly remote broadcasts of Muscatine area high-school sports, and occasional special broadcasts of community events.

History

Call Sign History

The Muscatine allocation for 93.1 MHz signed on the air in June 1996 as KWCC, and switched to its current KMCS call sign on November 2, 2005.[1]

93 Country

The former KWCC was branded as 93 Country from its inauguration in 1996 until its call sign change and change to its current Mac FM branding on November 2, 2005. During this time, the station played a country music format and had a local talent presence in its Muscatine-based studios, which it shared with its immediate sister AM station, KWPC.

Mac FM 94.7 - 93.1: 2005 to present

The switch from Country music to Adult Hits on 93.1, along with Clinton-based sister station KZEG, now KMCN, happened in November 2005, with both the new stations branded as "93.1 & 94.7 Mac FM." KWCC changed its call letters to KMCS, which stands for Mac South, while its sister station in Clinton changed its call letters from KZEG to KMCN, which stands for Mac North.[2] Despite there being a gap between the two broadcast areas, mainly in Davenport, Iowa, the stations still target the "Quad Cities" market along the IowaIllinois border.
