KASN, virtual channel 38, branded as "The CW Arkansas", is an affiliate of The CW Television Network in Little Rock, Arkansas. The station is owned by Newport Television, in a duopoly with Fox affiliate KLRT (channel 16). The station shares studios with KLRT that are located east of I-430 on Colonel Glenn Rd. in West Little Rock, and its transmitter is located near Redfield.

The station broadcasts its digital signal on UHF channel 39, using its former analog channel assignment of 38 as its virtual channel via PSIP. On cable, KASN is available on Comcast analog channel 7 in standard definition and digital channel 236 in high definition in Little Rock. Not to be confused with KATV which broadcasts on channel 7 terrestrially but it is seen on channel 8 instead.

KASN requested to transmit in digital only, effective February 17, 2009.[1] After it shut down its analog signal on that date, the original scheduled completion date of the nationwide analog television shutdown, which Congress had moved the previous month to June 12, 2009, KASN-DT remained on its pre-transition digital channel number, 39, using PSIP to display its virtual channel as 38.

History

Early history

KASN signed on the air on June 17, 1986 as an independent station, KJTM. It joined Fox in October 1986, but in 1988, KASN negotiated a merger with eventual sister station and then-independent KLRT that would have moved KASN's Fox network affiliation and syndicated programming to KLRT, while KASN would become an affiliate of the Home Shopping Network. KLRT abruptly pulled out of the merger deal with KASN, notifying the station by fax of its nullification of the deal on its part. However in April 1990, Fox chose to have its affiliation moved to the higher-rated KLRT rendering KASN an independent once again; this was despite the fact that a stipulation of the agreement was that KASN would remain as a Fox affiliate if the merger fell through.[2]

KASN's owner at the time, MMC Television Corp., filed a lawsuit against KLRT owner Little Rock Communications Associates and operator Scollard Communications, alleging civil conspiracy, misappropriation of trade secrets, interfering with business relationships, breach of contract and fraud.[2][3]

Losing Fox, and then affiliating with UPN

The Fox affiliation would change hands three times between the two stations before settling on its current Little Rock station. KASN became a UPN affiliate and ironically, given the previous lawsuit against channel 16, became a sister station to KLRT through a local marketing agreement by 1992. In 2000, Clear Channel Communications purchased KASN from Mercury Broadcasting, this was around the time the Federal Communications Commission overturned rules that barred common ownership of two television stations in the same market.[4]

The following year, KASN vacated its original studios and moved into the Clear Channel Metroplex (which was originally a Sam's Club location) on Colonel Glenn Road east of Interstate 430 in West Little Rock, where all of Clear Channel's Central Arkansas properties, including sister station KLRT, were consolidated.[5]

In addition to its primary programming from UPN and locally-produced programming, KASN previously aired content from the Shop at Home Network daily from 1 a.m. through 6 a.m. The programming was discontinued on the network's final day of broadcasting, June 22, 2006.[6]

As a CW affiliate

On January 24, 2006, The WB and UPN networks announced that they would merge into a new broadcast television network, The CW, named for its corporate parents CBS Corporation (the parent company of UPN) and Warner Bros. (parent of The WB Television Network).[7] The station affiliated with The CW Television Network on September 18, 2006 as local WB affiliate KWBF (channel 42), then owned by Equity Media Holdings (now KARZ-TV, owned by Nexstar Broadcasting Group, who also owns local NBC affiliate KARK-TV (channel 4), opted to affiliate with MyNetworkTV.

On April 20, 2007, Clear Channel entered into an agreement to sell its entire television stations group to Providence Equity Partners' Newport Television.[8] The group deal was consummated on March 14, 2008.
