The K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering, abbreviated as KJSCE, was established in 1983 at Somaiya Vidyavihar. It offers 4 year degree courses in the departments of Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology and Mechanical Engineering. KJSCE is affiliated to the University of Mumbai. It is one of the premier engineering institutes in Maharashtra. Apart from its sprawling campus, the institution has for long attracted lucrative placement packages for its students.
KJSCE was the first engineering college in Maharashtra to get accreditation by the National Board of Accreditation (New Delhi) in 1997. All 5 courses offered by KJSCE were accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (New Delhi) for a period of 3 years starting 5th May, 2009.

Symphony, the inter-collegiate cultural festival of KJSCE, has created its name and popularity among Engineering and Management institutes under Mumbai university for the last decade. Every year many students from various institutes participate in the programme. The main aim is to promote, encourage and exhibit the talents of the students on a common platform and create interest in the classical, vocal and instrumental music.
The event was started in 1991 as a small intra campus festival and has now grown to be one which is backed by a solid organization and fun. There are not less than 15000 students that come to symphony every year. The organizers of yesteryears have hosted artists of the magnitude of Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma, Louis Banks, Hariharan, Indus Creed, Parikrama, KK, Bombay Vikings, Taufiq Quereshi, Dagar, Euphoria, Suraj Jagan etc. The event also has a social touch to propagate a message relevant to the times like AIDS awareness, etc. There have also been Auto Shows and an Army display at Symphony.
The organization is done by students which is also a time for building strong camaraderie and team work. Many students look back fondly at the memories gathered during this phase of their lives.
Symphony 2011 was held in the first week of February, 2011. With Symphony 2010 being a magnificent success, Symphony 2011 was slated to be the next grand event to be at, in the Mumbai College Fest Circuit. With rising expectations came the promise of a fest that was something to look forward to!
The Computer Society of India Chapter at K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering was founded in 2003. The CSI-KJSCE students' chapter organizes technical events, workshops, seminars and many such events during the course of the year. CSI-KJSCE has more than 400 student members from the Computer and IT Departments.
The CSI-KJSCE Council comprises a Chairperson, Student Branch Counselor, Faculty Advisors and Heads of Departments (Computer and IT). The General Secretary heads the CSI students' council. The other posts in the council are Joint General Secretary, Public Relations Officer, Treasurer, Secretary, Technical Head, Event Manager, Creative Head, Magazine Chief, Second Year Head and Second Year Representative.
Tatva Convergence
CSI-KJSCE in association with the Departments of Computer Engineering and Information Technology organize their annual tech-fest each year called Tatva Convergence. Many technical and fun events along with workshops and seminars are organized at this one-day extravaganza. Students of Computer Engineering and Information Technology are felicitated each year for good academic performance. Teachers along with student members participate in the events organized by the CSI Council. Tatva Convergence 2010 was held on 20th March 2010 with a theme of 'Technovation'.
TATVA CONVERGENCE 2011 - "The Tech Arcade" was held on Saturday, 19th March, 2011 and was a huge success with over 400 students being a part of the fest. CSI Week 2011 was held from 14th to 18th March 2011.
Orion Racing India (O.R.I) is a team of enthusiastic engineers from K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering, Mumbai, India determined to get the most out of their educational experience. Through passion and commitment, students collaborate as a team to design, build, test and race an open-wheeled formula style race car that competes in the annual Formula SAE competition. Having developed four such cars (Barracuda600, Itanta, Stallion and ORI 10) the team is presently working on their fifth and their most advanced machine.
The Formula SAE competition is held by the Society of Automotive Engineers, and is the biggest engineering design competition in the world! It is a worldwide competition, with events held in the United States (2), UK, Australia, Germany, Japan, Brazil and Italy. The competition comprises seven events: Cost and Manufacturing Analysis, Presentation, Design, Acceleration, Skid Pad, Autocross, and Endurance.
The team received the "best improvement" award when placing 69th out of 78 and became not only the best Indian team but the best Asian team in FSG09.
The vehicle excels not only in its mechanical aspects but also in the electronic ones. The car is equipped with electronic components like Graphic L.C.D, Paddle shifting(semi-automatic gear shift) system, USB data logging and various sensors. An industrial standard protocol for sensor communication i.e. Controller Area Network (CAN) has also been implemented. Telemetry system has been added to aid driver to pit communication. Apart from this several other modules like brake bias, shift lights, etc. are also present on-board. All the electronic systems are developed in house by the students themselves. Every year a new vehicle is designed from scratch, with each car being an improvement over the previous one. Most of the team members take building the car as their final year B.E project, hence fusing together academics and passion. Teamwork, leadership, problem solving skills as well as engineering and business skills are promoted throughout the entire process of designing and building the race car. The design process gives team members, as well as the sponsors an excellent opportunity to network with each other, resulting beneficial relationships for all involved.
Through their relentless desire to succeed the team is confident of making an impact on the current racing scenario in India.
Kshitij is the annual magazine of K J Somaiya College of Engineering. This magazine is an attempt to provide the students a platform to bring out their ideas and hidden talents. The choice of articles for students' consideration range from a very scholarly exploration of ideas in order to whet students' intellectual acumen, to a few techniques for aiding personality development and general issues.
"A lot has changed since Kshitij was first released in 1986; it now has more pages, more content and more color. It's got that added dash of vibrance, and covers a lot more events. Still there remains that one thing about the annual magazine that hasn't changed over time, it being the fact that nothing captures the fervor of KJSCE like Kshitij does." - Extract from the Editorial of Kshitij 2010.
