"Just a Job to Do" is a song by Genesis. It was released on their 1983 self-titled album Genesis. The lyrics, written by guitarist–bassist Mike Rutherford, tell the story of a private investigator chasing down his subject.[1] The basic theme of the refrain is that the protagonist has a name and a number, and from that will home in on his target.
The song was used as the theme song for the short-lived 1985 ABC TV series The Insiders. It was also used during a climactic gun battle aboard Victor Kiriakis' yacht during an episode of Days of our Lives in the mid-80's.
The song's working title during recording sessions was "M J".[2]
