Julian King (diplomat)

Julian Beresford King, CMG (born 22 August 1964), is the British Ambassador to Ireland, appointed in September 2009, succeeding David Reddaway.

Before his appointment to Ireland in 2009 he headed the office of the British Commissioner in Brussels: first Peter Mandelson, then Baroness Ashton.

He was born in the West Midlands and went to the local grammar school. He studied Philosophy and Theology at Oxford University and joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1985.

Education

He went to Bishop Vesey's Grammar School in Sutton Coldfield. He then gained a BA in Philosophy And Theology from St Peter's College, Oxford. He also studied at the École nationale d'administration in Paris where he met his future wife.

Career

Personal life

He married Lotte Knudsen in 1992 in south-west France. They met in Paris and still have a house near where they married. Lotte Knudsen works in the European Commission as Director for Justice Matters in Directorate-General for Justice, Freedom and Security. They have two dogs, Molly who lives in Brussels and Cadbury who lives in Ireland. Cadbury was adopted from the Dogs Trust, a international dog charity with a rehoming centre in Dublin.
