Jose Alvarez (baseball)

Jose Lino Alvarez (born April 12, 1956 in Tampa, Florida) is a retired Major League Baseball pitcher. He played four seasons at the major league level, pitching for the Atlanta Braves. He played for the Braves in 1981 and 1982, then spent five seasons in the minor leagues before returning to the Braves in 1988 and 1989.

Alvarez played his first professional season with the Braves' Rookie league Kingsport Braves in 1978, and his last with their Triple-A club, the Richmond Braves, in 1995. He currently resides in Greenville, SC. He is on staff with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes serving as Chaplain on the PGA's Nationwide Tour.

He has coached youth baseball and high school baseball in Greenville, SC. He has a unique story of taking what life has to offer and making the best of it beginning from his mother's decision not to abort him and giving him a chance at life, to his dad being arrested when Jose was 5 years old, leaving him, his siblings and mother alone.

Jose routinely speaks at FamilyLife marriage conferences around the country called "Weekend To Remember" with his wife Michelle.^[1] He is the father of 3 grown children, a married daughter and two sons. He is a member of Life Athletes, an organization that promotes pro-life issues and abstinence before marriage.
