In Chile, Acuña made his professional debut with Unión Española in 1999. He spent one season with Unión Española, before moving to Chilean powerhouse Universidad Católica where he would stay for three years.
In 2002, Acuña signed a contract with Dutch club Feyenoord. Following a Feyenoord Reserve match on April 15, 2004, he and other Feyenoord players, including Robin van Persie, were attacked by AFC Ajax hooligans. Acuña was taken to the hospital with head, neck and rib injuries. In 2005, the club loaned him to RBC Roosendaal.
He played for RBC Roosendaal until the summer of 2006 when his contract expired (it was never renewed).
Local rivals to Blackburn Rovers, Wigan Athletic took the Chilean on trial on the 17th of January 2007, but he finally signed with Universidad de Chile.
He then joined Israeli club Maccabi Netanya FC in a one-year contract on the 26th of June 2007 but refused to go to Israel and stayed in Chile. Universidad de Chile's coach Arturo Salah then fired him from the squad and he signed with the South African team Mamelodi Sundowns.
In recent controversy, Acuña claimed in statements made to Cooperative Radio that he has been discriminated at his present club. He assured that Patrice Motsepe, president of its team, is racist and discriminates him for being "white".
"I can play well yet they always tell me that I am doing something wrong. There are things that I do that they like, I always play 100 percent. At times I can play well or badly, but that always they say that I do the things badly he do not i like", exclaimed Acuña.
He explained that a sign of the discrimination that suffers on the part of the top leader of his team, he is that the owner of the assembly greets the players of color that are chosen man of the match. The Chilean has been elected on five occasions and the executive has never congratulated him.
This caused Acuña to want to return to Chile, to Universidad Católica.
"I have committed so many errors along my career, but I have something that calls me of Chile, that is the stripe (of the Universidad Católica)", assured the former university player.
Acuña then returned to Chile to play for Ñublense in 2009. He was signed by Unión San Felipe in the Winter of 2010.
