John Vaillant is a non-fiction author and journalist who was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts and has lived in Vancouver for the past thirteen years.[1] His first book, The Golden Spruce, won the 2005 Governor General's Award for Non-Fiction and the Writers' Trust Non-Fiction Prize. It dealt with the felling of the Golden Spruce or Kiidk'yaas on Haida Gwaii by Grant Hadwin.
His 2010 work, The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival is about a man-eating tiger incident that happened in the 1990s in Russia's Far Eastern Primorsky Krai, where most of the world's Amur tigers live. It is a mixture of investigative journalism, social history, geography and natural writing. The Tiger won British Columbia's National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction for 2010,[2] and Globe and Mail Best Book for Science 2010.
