John Mallinson (b. 1934 in Melbourne) B.Mus (Melb), ARCM, LRAM, ARCO, MIMT, MACE, went to Scotch College, where he learned organ with Claude Monteath. At Melbourne University Faculty of Music he studies with Dr Arthur Nickson for organ, and with Roy Shepherd for piano. Later, in London at the Royal College of Music his tutors were Sir John Dykes-Bower, Organist of St. Paul's Cathedral and Dr Osborne Peasgood, Sub-Organist at Westminster Abbey.[1] Principal appointments have been Organist and Choirmaster at St. Mark's Anglican Church, Camberwell and Organist of St Patrick's Cathedral from 1976 for 24 years, where for the last 13 years of his appointment he was also Master of the Choristers and Director of Music.[2]
His many years of dedicated service to church music was acknowledged in 1999 by the conferring of the prestigious "Dr Percy Jones" Award.[3] As a teacher John is widely respected for his judgement and for the encouragement he gives to young musicians to reach the highest standards. He has been a member of staff at Scotch College, Melbourne Grammar School, Mentone Grammar school, St Kevin's College and at Camberwell Grammar School where he was director of Music for 24 years from 1964.[4] Also he has taught for the Faculty of Music at University of Melbourne since 1965[5] and later for the Australian Catholic University, and is an examiner for the AMEB and the VCE. An area of service has been as a member of the committees of the Victorian Board of Studies, the Royal School of Church Music Victoria Branch and the Society of Organists (Victoria) of which he was President from 2000 to 2003. From 2000 up to the end of 2008 when he retired,[6] he held the post of Organist and Director of Music at St George's Anglican Church, Malvern.[7]
