Praised by The New York Times for his "great flair and virtuosity",[1] Lenehan's performances and recordings have been acclaimed throughout the world.
Lenehan has made seventeen solo albums for Naxos, Sony, Classic FM and EMI and has regularly performed with British orchestras, including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the English Chamber Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He made his Debut with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican in October 2010 and in February 2011 completed his survey of the complete piano music of John Ireland with a recording of both the Piano Concerto in Eb and Legend with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by John Wilson.
John Lenehan has collaborated with various instrumentalists, including James Galway, Emma Johnson, Nigel Kennedy, Tasmin Little and Julian Lloyd Webber, and he is recognised as one of the leading accompanists and chamber musicians of today. Gramophone has described Lenehan as "a very accomplished performer: not only is his technical address impeccable, but he also possesses a strikingly wide dynamic range and sophisticated variety of tone colour, both of which he uses to marvellously poetic (and never remotely selfconscious) effect throughout".[2]
In recent years, Lenehan has appeared in major concert halls in Amsterdam, Salzburg, Vienna, New York, Washington, Toronto, Seoul, Shanghai and Tokyo, performing with Sarah Chang, Rivka Golani and others.
In addition to his career as a pianist, Lenehan is also active as a composer and an arranger, and his works have been recorded by, among others, Nigel Kennedy, Tasmin Little, Julian Lloyd Webber and Angelika Kirchschlager.
Both Oxford University Press and Universal Edition have published Lenehan's transcriptions and arrangements, while his writing project called Keynotes (four books of piano repertoire, each containing a new Lenehan work) has been published by Faber Music. Schott Music has published Lenehan's collection of original pieces for flute and piano called Little Gems.
As musical director of Sounds for Silents, an ensemble dedicated to playing live music for silent films, Lenehan has written and arranged numerous film scores for the group that have been performed in Australia, Italy, Ireland and at many festivals in the UK.
Lenehan has made more than 60 CDs, both as a soloist and an accompanist, and his recordings are available on the ASV, BIS, BMG, Decca, EMI, Naxos, Philips and Virgin labels. His solo recordings include collections of piano music by Philip Glass, Scott Joplin and Erik Satie as well as John Ireland's complete piano music. Lenehan's recording of Michael Nyman's The Piano Concerto with the Ulster Orchestra won a Gramophone Award and it peaked at number five on the UK Classical Chart.
Lenehan has recorded performances with Emma Johnson, Nigel Kenneny, Tasmin Little, Julian Lloyd Webber, Linda Brava, Marat Bisengaliev, John Harle and others.
