John Garton

The Rt Rev John Henry Garton is a former Suffragan Bishop of Plymouth.[1] He was born on 3 October 1941 and educated at Worcester College, Oxford and Ripon College Cuddesdon.[2] After a short service commission in the Royal Tank Regiment he was ordained in 1969 and began his career as a Chaplain to the Forces. From 1973 until 1976 he was a Lecturer at Lincoln Theological College and then Rector of St Peter’s Hillfields.[3] He then spent ten years as Principal of Cuddesdon before ascending to the Episcopate -a post he held from 1996 until 2005, since when he has been an Assistant Bishop within the Diocese of Oxford.
