John Godfrey Morris (born December 7, 1916 in Chicago) is a picture editor.

Career

Journalist John Godfrey Morris (1916) has spent a lifetime editing photographs for magazines and newspapers, working with hundreds of photographers, among them the great names of 20th century photography.[1]

He worked for the weekly picture magazine Life throughout World War II.[2] As LIFE's London Picture Editor he was responsible for the coverage of the invasion of France on June 6, 1944 - D-Day, thus editing the historic photos of Robert Capa. After the war he became successively the Picture Editor of the U.S. monthly Ladies' Home Journal, Executive Editor of Magnum Photos,[3] Assistant Managing Editor for Graphics of The Washington Post and Picture Editor of The New York Times.

In 1983 he moved to Paris, as the European correspondent of National Geographic.[1] Now a freelance writer and editor, his primary concern is working for peace.

Publications

His autobiography GET THE PICTURE, A PERSONAL HISTORY OF PHOTOJOURNALISM, was published by Random House in 1998 and republished in paperback by The University of Chicago Press in 2002. It has been translated in French (Éditions de La Martinière, 1999), Italian (Contrasto Due, 2011), Japanese and Polish (Wydanie pierwsze, 2007). He is co-author of ROBERT CAPA D-DAY, in French and English (Point de Vues, 2004).
