John Cragg Farthing (b 13 December 1861 - 6 May 1947) was the Anglican Bishop of Montreal for 30 years during the first half of the twentieth century.[1]
Born in Toronto, John Cragg Farthing was educated at Caius College, Cambridge .[2] He embarked on an ecclesiastical career with a curacy at Woodstock, Ontario, swiftly followed by elevation to the incumbency within the same parish. Promotion followed rapidly and he was, successively, a Canon of St Paul’s Cathedral, London, Ontario , Dean of Ontario and finally Bishop of Montreal.[3] A keen observer of Montreal life[4] and moderate prelate[5] he was the father of philosopher John Farthing, his only child from his marriage to Mary Kemp.[6]
