John F. Wippel

Monsignor John F. Wippel is a priest of the Diocese of Steubenville and is a leading authority on the metaphysical thought of St. Thomas Aquinas.^[1][2] Msgr. Wippel has won the Cardinal Mercier Prize for International Philosophy in 1981, two National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships, and has been named a Professor of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas.^[3] He is currently the Theodore Basselin Professor of Philosophy at the Catholic University of America.

Education

Msgr. Wippel received his BA (1955) and MA (1956) in philosophy while he was a seminarian at the Catholic University of America.^[4] After also earning an S.T.L. (1960), Msgr. Wippel then pursued a doctorate in philosophy at the Catholic University of Louvain under the direction of Fernand van Steenburghen.^[4] He submitted his thesis after only two years and received the grade of the very highest distinction (summa cum laude).^[4] He was invited to pursue the Maître Agrégé de l'École Saint Thomas d'Aquin at the Université catholique de Louvain, where he later studied and completed his degree in 1981 on the metaphysical thought of Godfrey of Fontaines.
