Johannes Holtfreter (1901–1992) was a German-born American embryologist. He mixed cells in vitro from embryonic amphibian species and different tissues. In 1955 he published the results of his experiments in an article, proving that the cells from the same origin reassociate preferentially and that these tissues are organized spontaneously in vitro to the normal development of the embryo.[1]
