The Joel Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race in Great Britain which is open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late September or early October.
The event was formerly known as the Main Reef Stakes, and for a period it was classed at Listed level. Main Reef was a colt owned and bred by Jim Joel, and his victories included Newmarket's July Stakes in 1978. The distance of the Main Reef Stakes was cut to 1 mile in 1989, having been set previously at 1 mile and 2 furlongs.
Jim Joel died in 1992, and the race was renamed the Joel Stakes in 1994. Its status was raised to Group 3 in 2003, and to Group 2 in 2011.[1] It is now held on the second day of Newmarket's three-day Cambridgeshire Meeting.
The Joel Stakes is currently sponsored by Shadwell, and its full title includes the name of Nayef, a Shadwell stallion.
