Early life

He was raised in Gamlingay in Cambridgeshire,[5] and was educated at Bedford Modern School,[1][6][7][8] an independent school in the county town of Bedford in Bedfordshire, England, followed by the National Youth Theatre[9] and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.[10][11] Irvine's stage name comes from his grandfather's first name.[12]

Acting career

Irvine played the role of Luke in the television series Life Bites[7][13] and has appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company[9][14] in the 2010-production of Dunsinane.[15]

In June 2010, Irvine was cast to play the lead character in the Steven Spielberg film War Horse, released in December 2011.[9][16][17] The film was an adaption of Michael Morpurgo's novel, also entitled War Horse. Irvine was selected to play Albert Narracott,[18] the main character, alongside other British actors, including Peter Mullan and Emily Watson—as Albert's father and mother, respectively.[9][19][20][21][22] During production of the film, Irvine began to be represented by the Creative Artists Agency from July 2010, in addition to agents Hatton McEwan in the United Kingdom.[23]

In April 2011, Variety reported that Irvine had been cast to play the role of Pip in a Mike Newell film production of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens against Helena Bonham Carter.[24][25]

In October 2011, the Holly Reporter noted that Irvine was expected to play the young Eric Lomax in a film production of The Railway Man, with Colin Firth playing the older Lomax in the film.[26]

Personal life

Irvine has had Type 1 Diabetes since the age of six[27] and was involved in trials with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to test an artificial pancreas;[14][28] a form of automatic glucose meter attached to a portable insulin pump.[27] The tests took place at Addenbrooke's Hospital with the University of Cambridge.[29]
