Jel is primarily a producer, and is known for his use of the SP-1200 to create drum beats with little to no sequencing; in other words, "playing" the drums live via the sampler pads. Jel has produced tracks for many of his fellow Anticon label-mates and is featured on a number of Anticon releases. He has also released several solo and instrumental albums.
Jel is also a rapper. He performs on several tracks of Soft Money, a solo album. One of his most notable vocal outings occurs alongside fellow anticon members Pedestrian and Sole in "Arrest The President", a track off Pedestrian's album Unindian Songs Vol. 1 (which Jel also helped produce). He can also be heard rapping and performing background vocals for the groups Subtle and Themselves.
