Jainagar, Bihar

Jainagar (also spelt Jaynagar) is a city and a notified area in Madhubani district in the Indian state of Bihar. It is situated on the holy river Kamla. Jainagar is now well connected by broad gauge railway system with the major cities of India, and has a railway line to Nepal, though this is currently in poor condition. NH 104 and NH 105 connect with Jainagar, providing it with good transport facilities. The local language is Maithali. Jayanagar in the border area of Nepal is situated just 3 km away from Jainagar.

There are many temples in Jainagar, of which two are most famous are Durga mandir(105 ft high and situated 2 km away from the railway station), and Shilanath (famous for Lord Shiva), and situated 4 km away from the railway station, near DV College.

Demographics

As of 2001^[update] India census,^[1] Jainagar had a population of 29487. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Jainagar has an average literacy rate of 58%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 67%, and female literacy is 48%. In Jainagar, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Culture

Jainagar celebrates many festivals with joy and enthusiasm throughout the year. One of the main festivals celebrated here is Chhath, five days after Deepawali. Makar Sankranti (Kichdi) is celebrated on 14 January, Saraswati Puja (with grand statues), Holi (all colourful), Ram Navami, Raksha Bandhan (between brothers and sisters), Durga Puja, Diwali, Eid, and Muharram are also celebrated in Jainagar.
