Jarte is a word processor for users of Microsoft Windows, based around the WordPad engine. In terms of market appeal, Jarte sits between the feature laden Microsoft Word and other more basic word processors such as Notepad. The standard version of Jarte is offered free of charge, while an enhanced version called Jarte Plus may be purchased. The purchasable version offers a variety of extra features, including Auto-Correct and Auto-Outline. In most other respects, Jarte Plus is the same as the freeware version.
Both versions are provided with a spell checker. During the installation process, Jarte allows for the option of installing multiple language functionality that includes French, German, Italian and Spanish. In keeping with its attempt to provide universal appeal, Jarte also offers regional variations of English.
In terms of visual layout, the creators of Jarte have been influenced by Mac OS X. Jarte bears a striking resemblance to TextEdit. Jarte is fully compatible with Windows Vista and offers 'tabbed' functionality. It reads DOC, RTF, TXT and DOCX and is also capable of export to HTML or PDF.
Currently, Jarte is only available for Windows Operating systems (98 SE, 2000, XP, and Vista), but it can be used on Linux-based systems with Wine.
