Jane Kim (born 1977 in New York City) is an American politician currently serving on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors representing District 6, consisting of Alcatraz Island, Civic Center, Mission Bay, South of Market, the Tenderloin, Treasure Island, and Yerba Buena Island.[1]
Prior to her election to the Board of Supervisors, she served as member and president of the San Francisco Board of Education.[1]
Kim has been a subject of controversy when she refuses to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at Board of Supervisors meetings. She says that it was a personal decision and that she rejects the words "with liberty and justice for all" because the United States has not yet achieved the goal of ensuring freedom and justice for all individuals.[2]
Kim said she had no opinion on whether the persecuted Chinese spiritual group Falun Gong should be allowed to participate in the Chinese New Year parade in San Francisco. She opposed her predecessor Chris Daly's efforts attempting to protect Falun Gong's rights not to be discriminated.[3]
