James Cook was founded in 1957 after Moorefield racecourse was demolished and the ground was divided into housing development and two schools: Moorefield Girls High School and James Cook Boys Technology High School, and St George TAFE. James Cook had an opportunity to become a Sports High School but decided to become a Technology High School. Queen Elizabeth II visited the school in 1970 (the bicentennial year of Australia's discovery by James Cook) along with her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and Anne, Princess Royal.
James Cook Boys' Technology High School is committed to providing quality education through a wide range of academic, sporting and welfare programs. This institution offers a learning environment that encourages success by supporting students from all cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. As a measure of this approach the James Cook Boys' Technology High School was awarded the "Director-General of Education School Achievement Award for Excellence in Boys' Education"[2]
The staff at James Cook Boys' High School look forward to developing a positive and productive relationship with international students. The aim is to help these young men achieve their goals and aspirations. This collaboration results in the majority of students successfully communicating in English. James Cook Boys has very strong teams in a variety of sports. They are always in the top 2 in the St George Sports Association behind Sydney Tech. But comparing the ratio of students to overall points James Cook is by far the number one in the St George Sports Association. They participate in the following sports:
Regular Summer Grade Sports: Cricket, Basketball, Baseball, Squash, Table Tennis, Touch Football, Volleyball, Mini Soccer
Regular Winter Grade Sports: Baseball, Rugby League, Soccer, Softball, Table Tennis, Tennis, Australian rules football
Regular Non-Grade Activities: Fitness, Senior Rec and Action Sports both including Soccer, Basketball, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball, Touch Football And Special School.
Prior to 2009, 12 prefects were elected from the year 12 group each year. The School Captain, two Vice-Captains were selected from the 12 prefects elected after they had presented their speech. There are five year 11 Prefects.
There are also 3 junior SRC members from each year from year 8 till year 10.
The prefects have meetings on every second Tuesdays at lunch. In recent times the role of the greater prefect body has been rather limited, although the school captain and vice captain have many duties, including the captain's duty to run the weekly school assemblies. All prefects that are not part of the Prefect executives do canteen duty during recess and lunchtimes as well as toilet duty(locking and unlocking toilets.
Moorefield Girls High School is considered to be the female counterpart or 'sister school' of James Cook Boys Highschool, and has recently engaged in Prefect activities to organise a joint multicultural day. They are also thinking of other ways to make the two schools become engaged with other activities in the near future.
