Jadaliyya is a volunteer - run ezine[1] that offers analytical articles and creative pieces[2] by academics, journalists, activists, and artists[3] from and/or on the Middle East. Jadaliyya is produced by the Arab Studies Institute (ASI) and features both English - and Arabic-language content.[4][1]
Background
Jadaliyya was officially launched on September 21st, 2010.[5] Within a few days, the website had "a steady readership of 500 to 1000 readers daily."[5] After the beginning of the Arab Uprisings in December 2010/January 2011, the site attracted "10,000-14,000 visitors a day."[5]
Impact
The Turkish newspaper, Today's Zaman, referred to Jadaliyya as "one of the leading English language Arab websites."[6] Various college and university courses on the the Middle East have included its articles and essays in their syllabi.[7][8][9][10][11][12][13] Media outlets such as NPR,[14] PBS,[15][16] London Review of Books,[17] and The Guardian[18][19] have also referenced it when discussing events related to the Arab Uprisings, as well as the Middle East more generally. In addition, Jadaliyya Co-Editors have been featured on various international television channels and radio stations, including the BBC,[20] Democracy Now,[21] and Al Jazeera English.[22] Its articles have also been republished either in their original form[23][24][25] or translated into different languages by media outlets.[26]
Aims and scope
Jadaliyya's goal is to provide, "a unique source of insight and critical analysis that combines local knowledge, scholarship, and advocacy with an eye to audiences in the United States, the Arab world, and beyond."[1]
