Jabal al-Ṭārif

Jabal al-Ṭārif is an archaeologically and historically important cliff area within the boundaries of Egypt.

Etymology

Translated from the Arabic, the word Jabal (جبل) mean mountain, hill or slope , ta'rif meaning information, notification, or inventory of fees to be paid having developed from the word arafa at an unspecified time.[1]

Settlement

Situated in close proximity to the cliff is Hamra Dūm.[2][3]

Sacred writings

It is also the location where the Nag Hammadi library writings were found by tribesmen known as Mohammed Ali and Abu al-Maid (sons of Ali Khalifa), belonging to a clan named al-Samman.[4][5][6]

Tombs

The place is the location of tombs of ancient Egyptians.[7][8][9] [10]
