Indiependence is an annual Irish indie-rock music festival, that usually takes place at or near Mitchelstown in County Cork. Indiependence is one of the "little two" music festivals in Ireland, sharing many of its acts with Castlepalooza which is held on the same weekend in Tullamore, County Offaly.[1][2] Nevertheless, it is billed as the largest event of its kind in the south of Ireland.[3]
Most of the acts are Irish but foreign acts have performed as well, such as White Lies, Super Furry Animals, Ocean Colour Scene and The Proclaimers.[2] The organiser claims that, after Oxegen and Electric Picnic, it is the biggest festival in Ireland and that there is no festival of this size in either Ireland or the UK that has a similar calibre of acts.[3]
In its early incarnation, the festival was billed as Ireland's only free independent music festival.[4] However, the festival disposed of its free status in 2009 by charging for entry.[2] The festival was sponsored by Guinness and Cork's Red FM up until 2007 with Bavaria taking over a main sponsor in 2008. Red Bull joined as sponsor in 2009.

Indiependence developed from a festival which occurred in Mitchelstown from the early 1990s until 2004 and featured both Irish acts and international acts such as Coolio, Dannii Minogue and Eamon.[1] High ticket prices meant the festival ran into difficulties so Shane Dunne, who is now the organiser, organised a free festival in 2006.[1] When 10,000 people turned up to watch The Blizzards headline in 2008, Dunne decided the festival needed to expand the following year.[1] The 2009 festival included several stages, a campsite, admission fees and a 4,500 capacity as a result.[1] If the 2009 festival is successful, Dunne expects to expand the capacity to as much as 10,000 in 2010.[1] The site which currently hosts the festival can hold up to 20,000 people, with only potential licencing difficulties dissuading Dunne from making maximum use of the site in 2009.[1]
The 2006 festival was a two-day affair taking place on Saturday 5 August and Sunday 6 August. It was headlined by The Proclaimers, The Sultans Of Ping FC and The Frank and Walters. Hybrasil also played at the festival. [2]

The 2007 festival took place from Friday 3 August until Monday 6 August. Editors had previously been rumoured to appear on the Sunday night of the 2007 festival but organisers have confirmed that - although talks were held with the band - the Birmingham quartet did not play. Their rumoured headline slot was instead filled by co-headliners Delorentos and Director. Republic of Loose headlined on Friday, followed by The Sultans Of Ping FC on Saturday. The Monday night saw the bill dominated by world music acts, with Niwell Tsumbu and Harry J & The Conspiracy performing. [4] Other bands to play included Ham Sandwich [5], The Chapters, The Aftermath, Fight Like Apes and [esta Varro. An acoustic stage was yet to be announced.

Indie-pendence 2008, like previous years, took place at New Square in Mitchelstown, County Cork from 1–3 August. Plans to change the event into a three-day green site festival with full camping facilities were put on hold until 2009. Amongst the performees were The Blizzards, Cathy Davey, Ham Sandwich, The Flaws, Fight Like Apes, The Chapters, Dirty Epics, Alphastates, |Travega, Gemma Hayes, Giveamanakick, Sweet Jane, The Laundry Shop, Hope is Noise, Fred, The Kinetiks, The Aftermath, Vesta Varro, New Amusement, Rulers of the Planet, and Supermodel Twins. Entry was free.[5][6]
The 2009 festival was held on 1–2 August at a 5,000 capacity green field located five minutes from Mitchelstown. The festival was launched on 14 May, with Super Furry Animals and Ocean Colour Scene named as headliners.[2][7] Other acts announced at this time were Delorentos, Mundy, Messiah J & The Expert, The Aftermath, Travega, 202s, Dish Go Deep, The Chapters, The Blizzards, Director, The Frank and Walters, Vesta Varro and Fred.[7] There will be three stages.[2]
Tickets went on sale on 16 May, priced at €39 for one day and €59 for the weekend.Locals in Mitchelstown were able to buy the 2 day ticket for 39 euro[2][7] More acts will be announced later.
Camping details were announced on 8 July 2009 and include facilities for as many as 300 people and flushing toilets.[8] The campsite was officially announced on 17 July 2009.[9]
Stages include the Bavaria Main Stage, the Cyprus Avenue Arena (with an 800 capacity) and the Red Bull Village.[3]
The full line-up was announced on the 22 June 2009.[10] Panama Kings, Pocket Promise, SetMaker, Nicole Maguire and Gillian Verrecchia were added on 26 June 2009.[11]

The 2010 festival ran July 31 and August 1
In 2010 Indiependence was be held on a new site. The site is 40 acres (160,000 m2) situated at Deer Farm under a mile from the centre of Mitchelstown. The site which is a combination of grassland and hardcore is located on a limestone basin at the foot of the Galtee mountains. This means its dry and when it does rain, it drains well. The number of stages also increased in 2010 to 4 covered stages.
Bavaria Main Stage:
The Bavaria Main Stage was a new 3,500 capacity permanent structure. Acts such as White Lies, Reverend And The Makers and The Coronas were amongst the 20 acts to perform on the Bavaria Main Stage.
The Cyprus Avenue Arena:
For years, Cyprus Avenue on Caroline Street in Cork has been known for breaking up and coming acts and bringing the best international bands to Cork. Their presence at Indiependence is no surprise. The Cyprus Avenue Arena saw top quality Irish acts like Delorentos, Jape & Duke Special as well as many upcoming acts from Ireland, the UK, Germany and Italy.
The Monster Mash:
The Monster Mash tent was presented by Monster Energy. The stage will saw a mix of rock, electro and DJ’s from mid afternoon to early morning.
The Square:
The Square was a new addition for 2010. This festival has its origins in the square in the centre of Mitchelstown so there is a bit of history in the name. The Square was a 1,000 capacity tent showcasing some of the best up and coming talent that Ireland has to offer, as well as housing the nightly Silent Disco
ONSITE CAMPING:
Camping in 2010 was onsite, less than 10 yards from the main arena entrance.

The 2011 festival took place this year from July 29 to 31. It was the first year that three days of music were available. The festival took place at Deer Farm, Mitchelstown.[16]
The 2011 Festival had new attractions including a cinema in the camp site and boutique camping.[17] The 2011 festival also included a new comedy tent.
