History

The 11th five year plan, endorsed by the National Development Council in December 2007, envisaged the establishment of seven new IIMs. Aimed at generating both highly competent and highly trained manpower, the institutes are also expected to act as a major catalyst for developing a knowledge society that would inevitably impact the economic growth of the country.

IIM Rohtak is amongst the seven new IIMs that were approved by the Union Cabinet on August 27, 2009. It is also India’s first IIM north of Delhi. The institute is being mentored by IIM Lucknow in its formative years. The current faculty in charge of the academic programme consists primarily of senior faculty from IIM Lucknow and its Noida campus. Prof. P.Rameshan, the dean for admissions of IIM Kozhikode, is the current director of IIM Rohtak.[2]

Inauguration

IIM Rohtak started functioning on 30 June 2010. It was formally inaugurated on the same day by Mr. Ravi Kant, Vice Chairman of Tata Motors Ltd., in the presence of eminent faculty of IIM Lucknow and board members. Mr. Ravi Kant is the first Chairperson of the Board of Governors of IIM Rohtak. The initial batch strength has been pegged at 50 students to keep a high student teacher ratio.[3][4]

Campus

IIM Rohtak's 80 hectares (200 acres) campus is being constructed at village Garnwati near Rohtak city. A budget of about Rs.2.50 billion has been allocated by the Central Government of India to develop the campus. The foundation stone for the new campus was laid on 1 October 2010.[5]

A temporary campus is functioning from a newly constructed block of Maharishi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak. A memorandum of understanding has been signed between IIM Rohtak and MDU for utilising the infrastructure of MDU by IIM Rohtak. The classrooms are located in the newly constructed, fully furnished humanities block which is completely dedicated to IIM Rohtak. The block is supported with all state of the art facilities. According to the MOU the students of IIM Rohtak will have access to almost all physical and IT infrastructures that the university has to offer.[6]

Programs

The Post-Graduate Program (PGP) (recognised by UGC as equivalent to an MBA degree) is a two-year program being offered by IIM Rohtak. The program intends to produce world-class managers and leaders through its philosophy of exposing students to real life unstructured situations apart from imbibing them with knowledge of the analytical tools and business philosophies required to be a success in the current, and foreseeable, economic scenario. A casestudy-based method of pedagogy is being followed by the institute to this effect.[4]
